Podiatry and Performance
Making Strides is here to keep you moving! We bring a fresh, new approach to podiatry in Barnsley offering tailored treatment to the whole family. Struggling to do the things you love? Embarrassed about unsightly feet? We are here to help!
We are HCPC registered health care professionals with experience in both the NHS and private sectors.
We are happy to help you with your podiatry needs.
Podiatrists are registered healthcare professionals trained extensively to diagnose and manage problems of the foot and lower limb. Podiatrists can treat anything from long, thickened, fungal or ingrown nails, including performing surgery to remove problematic nails. They can help with sports injuries and musculoskeletal issues such as heel pain or other lower limb pain.
They will work with you to develop a treatment plan which may include rehabilitation exercises and prescription insoles called orthoses.
Our Podiatrists are HCPC registered and members of the Royal College of Podiatry which means they must meet strict standards of care and maintain professional standards.

Initial Consultation & Podiatry Treatment
30 mins – £46
The process involves patient registration which includes a full medical history and detailed information about any medication you are currently taking. A comprehensive assessment of foot and lower limb health, including testing of the nerves and blood supply to the feet, will be undertaken and any essential podiatry treatment such as toe nail cutting, hard skin removal and corns addressed. The treatment will conclude with a soothing foot massage and application of emollient for optimal foot care.
*Please note that if you are attending for an ingrown toenail we will attempt to conservatively treat the nail in this appointment at our £46 fee. Your podiatrist will advise if you may need nail surgery and are eligible for this.
Musculoskeletal/ Biomechanical Consultation
up to 1hr – £65
This appointment, exclusively available on Saturdays at our Shaw Lane venue, entails assessing lower limb strength and joint range of motion, observing you walking or running to identify any issues leading to your problem, and devising personalised rehabilitation plans that may include exercise or insoles.
We will take a full medical history, detailed information about any medication you are currently on, and discuss your problem in depth in order for us to diagnose the issue and determine the appropriate treatment.

I’ve just done the school run and been shopping, the insoles felt great! On my bad foot the support underneath takes the pain out of my heel completely. When I got home and put my slippers on I felt it straight away again. They are obviously working!

FAQ
What should I expect during a podiatry appointment?
Whether you have a core podiatry appointment or a musculoskeletal appointment, we will want to take some key information about you such as; your medical history, any medications you are currently on, any relevant family history, and your current activity levels and hobbies. Asking lots of questions helps us form a picture of your current health, and can indicate why you are experiencing certain symptoms, or facing a particular lower limb problem. Please don’t think we are just being nosey! It is all relevant to how we treat you and treating the person not the problem is what we strive for.
Following on from this questioning, we may want to perform a few assessments in order to come up with a diagnosis. On occasion, we may need further information to aid our diagnosis so it may be necessary to refer for x-ray or laboratory testing, or we may need to inform your GP of our findings.
Once we have a diagnosis we will work with you to create a personal treatment plan. This could be core podiatry treatment, rehabilitation exercises, or specialist insoles known as orthoses. The right treatment plan will depend on what we diagnose and how we feel you will best respond to treatment.
Do you treat diabetic foot problems?
If you are diabetic you are more at risk of losing the sensation in your feet and there can be related problems with the blood supply to your feet. We regularly (at least annually) check the sensation and blood supply to your feet. We routinely remove callus, corns, and treat cracked heels to avoid skin breakdown which can lead to ulceration. We advise on footwear and look at offloading areas where the skin is at risk of breaking down. We include this in our initial assessment and as a free add on to any of our podiatry treatments or, we can do this as a stand alone service if you are an existing patient.
Please note you must book a new patient/initial assessment if you have not been before or we have not seen you within the last 12 months.
Can I claim on my health insurance?
As registered podiatrists with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC – the governing body who regulate our practice), you are able to claim for podiatry treatment through most private health insurance, although please check with your provider and mention this at the time of booking.
Making Strides will be happy to issue you with a receipt detailing the registration number of your podiatrist so you can claim on your insurance if eligible.
I feel embarrassed about my feet, should I be?
Not at all! At Making Strides we are friendly, professional and ensure patient confidentiality. So no one will know you’ve been to see us, unless you’ve had a great experience and want to tell everyone! We welcome that! We see feet all day long, it’s what we do. We have experience in the NHS and within the private sector, trust us, there’s nothing we haven’t seen before. Please don’t feel embarrassed. We have lots of patients with really sensitive feet who always have a good giggle in our clinic. We love it! Laughter is contagious!
How do I make an appointment?
If you are booking an initial consultation and podiatry treatment then you will need to contact the Penistone clinic on 01226 765562 to make an appointment with Christina. These appointments are available Monday 9.30am-5pm and Tuesday 9.30am-2.30pm. Occasionally we open the diary on Saturdays.

If you try calling us and there is no answer we may be seeing patients in clinic. Please leave your name, telephone number, and a brief voicemail as to why you are calling and we will call you back within 24 hours.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
- Up to date details of any current medication
- Usual footwear
- Any trainers/suitable walking shoes for activity if appointment involves a biomechanical/musculoskeletal assessment
Can you help with sports-related injuries?
Absolutely! We offer a biomechanical and musculoskeletal assessment that looks at the range of motion in your hips, legs, ankles and feet. We check your muscle power and function and observe you walking or running, where we will identify any areas leading to your injury. We will then treat this with rehabilitation exercise or, if required, prescription insoles.
We may also refer you for further treatment if we feel you would benefit from this.
